Project: 1200 is a grassroots movement that uses social activism, creativity, and policy to take a stand against Big Tobacco - an industry that kills 1,200 people every day in the United States and 5 million people worldwide every year.
We will educate, advocate, and fight until Big Tobacco is brought to its knees.

Big Tobacco and LGBT Community

FACTS
  • Members of the LGBT community have higher rates of stress, depression, along with above-average tobacco use and substance abuse.
  • Roughly 40% of the LGBT community smokes - almost 200% higher than the general population.
    • In a recent national study on adolescent health, 45% of females and 35% of males who reported same-sex attraction or behavior smoked; compared to only 29% for the rest of the youth.
  • The American Cancer Society estimates that over 30,000 LGBT people die each year of tobacco related diseases.
  • Emphasis on bars and restaurants as social opportunities for LGBT people
create added exposure to secondhand smoke.
